Despite the fact that the numbers of scholars and graduate students conducting research on Myanmar has increased, yet it seems as though quite a few of them are not too keen on using Burmese (or for that matter any of the other local languages of Myanmar) for their study. Using English sources alone entails the danger of our failing to notice minute and delicate differences in contexts, which derive from the local people's sense of values.
This book consists of two chapters and both are based on the two authors' presentation at a workshop held under the title 'Myanmar Studies without Burmese? On how and why Language still matters for Area Studies,' which was held on March 12, 2020 at Australian National University.
